Dear friends,
In January this year, a few friends and I decided to start the DesaMentari Voluntary Tuition Centre. DesaMentari is a low-cost housing estate with nearly 4,000 homes, catering for over 15,000 people. A planning nightmare, the project was aimed at offering the children in DesaMentari an opportunity to improve their education prospects and break the vicious cycle of poverty.
The project, under the leadership and guiding hand of former teacher and educationist Mawarni Hassan, gets young professionals from all over Kuala Lumpur to volunteer their time to help standard 4 to 6 students from DesaMentari improve their English, Science and Mathematics. Every student pays a token fee of RM10 per month to help defray administrative costs and guarantee their commitment to take the project seriously.
Much has happened since. The shy students who previously refused to say a word of English in January can now confidently participate in Choral Speaking in front of a large crowd! They performed during a recent open day where the volunteers met the parents to brief them on their children’s performance and find out any problems at home.
We started with 15 students, now the number has ballooned to over 60 students. We started with classes once every week on Saturdays, now due to overwhelming demand it has increased to five following the request from parents: Saturday afternoons for standard four and five students; Sunday mornings as well as Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights for standard six students.
The increase follows demands from parents. Last weekend I met a grandmother in a neighbouring area, KampungLindungan, who was in tears requesting that a similar project be set up in her area as it was difficult to get affordable tuition for kids these days.
Therefore the volunteers are now overstretched. We need more volunteers to participate in this project. No matter how busy you are, I hope you can find some time in your busy schedule to help these kids. As the other volunteers can testify, spending time with these kids is a wonderful experience indeed!
