Reflecting on 8 March 2008

11 Mar 2008 | Current Affairs, Personal | by admin | 26 Komen

I haven’t had a chance to say my thanks to those who visit this blog – my family members, friends, supporters and constituents. Thanks for all the well wishes on Facebook, via e-mail, instant messaging, phone calls and SMSes. I have tried to reply to each, but I apologise to any which have gone unreplied!

I was humbled by the huge political tsunami. While early reports from our PACAs at the polling centres indicated that things were neck and neck between me and my opponent, it was only at about 9.00 PM that I received conclusive reports that I won. We were at our operations centre in Glomac, catching the latest news nationwide through the Internet and a big screen TV.

But the Selangor EC then was under pressure and even at 1.00 am could not confirm the results. Hannah Yeoh, Gwo Burne and I had to go out to our supporters waiting anxiously outside and pacify them. “We’ve waited for this for 50 years, let’s be patient a bit longer. They cannot silence the voice of the people forever!”

Our results were confirmed at about 3.30 AM. It was difficult not to shed a tear, after so long being belittled as a small party, our faith in the cause finally paid off. After all, I officially joined the party when we only had one Parliamentary seat to show and when many have dismissed our future. No wonder my colleagues who had joined the party from the beginning were emotional – after ten years, we’ve come of age.

Later, after thanking those who stayed on, a small group of my friends and campaign team went to our operations centre and checked the Internet for the latest results of the political tsunami nationwide.

I haven’t had an opportunity to properly sit down and get things in order yet, as things are developing very fast. But rest assured that I aim to implement my agenda very soon.

A friend sent me an SMS before the election, wishing me ‘takziah’ or condolences. It was a way pious Muslims reminded themselves on the responsibility of leadership. Please keep me on my toes, and continue to make me accountable in carrying this heavy burden.

I know this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Keadilan, PAS and DAP must use this golden opportunity to prove the viability of a multi-racial progressive movement in Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Penang, Kelantan and the Parliament and build on it. We must put the people ahead of the party. Otherwise, just as the people showed the courage to vote out so many BN representatives in this election, they will do so to us in five years time.

Thank you.

Bravo Budu! I have always said that, for good or for bad, you’re a political animal through and through. I have also said that you are the only politician I would trust my country with.

We are glad that you feel the burden of responsibility for what it is. Wear it well and carefully, for those who put you there did it with the biggest of hope.

All the best in your coming term, Budu!

  2. NoktahHitam:

There you go again, humble and subtle. I hope you wear this ‘patch’ on your shoulder for years to come.

I know there is no time for a victory lap (nor do you need one), at least take some time to breathe in. Its been a tough 2-3 weeks.

    Bro, congrats again.

I am now waiting anxiously to see what Barisan Rakyat’s next move. I wish the very best of luck in years to come. May peace be with you, Amin.

If you want to have a better future for our children in Malaysia, do you part by signing the on-line petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/RCER2008/petition.html

This is one of the way (non-violence) to bring our message to the Government. Don’t just sit there, stand up and be counted!

Why do we need to reform the Election Commission?

    1) Gerrymandering. The discrepancy between number of voters in voting areas is too great. The smallest parliamentary seat (Federal Territory, Putrajaya) has only 6,608 voters while the parliamentary seat for Kapar in Selangor has 112,224 voters. What this means is that one vote in the Putrajaya parliamentary constituency is equivalent to 17 votes in the Kapar constituency.

    2) Phantom voters. A common tactic is to ‘buy’ the identity card of the voters. Party members from the ruling parties will then vote on the voters’ behalf. Random checking of a person’s identity must be conducted using those finger print checking device (like the bank use). Any voting done on another person’s identity must be made a serious offence under the election law.

    3) Postal votes. The rules on postal voting must be reviewed, tightened and amended. The current rule favours the ruling party as the armed forces personnel and policemen who vote by ‘postal voting’ would obviously not jeopardize their career or promotion prospect by voting for the opposition. Voting under postal voting is not secret as it is under the watchful eyes of the senior officers.

    Salam,

  19. Mosesfoo:

I think we can LKS anything we want to give him…and most of all the whole CEC of DAP. As far as LKS is concerned, he has been through ISA and stuff like that, I think he take it in his stride. The CEC DAP? Well, we’ll see about that.

Anyway, beyond this, there are work for everyone, the new government and even we the people to keep them on their toe by being critical. BN at Federal and those of their states and the MSM will be baying for their blood at every turn. So those who do believe in Malaysia for all have to help to make it a reality.

  21. nizam:

    congratz!!!

Now, governs the 5 states successfully. Show the rakyat that you can govern states and then Malaysia nation especially in economy, safety, justice, education, state administration, transparency and many more.

if you excel in the five states, you can convince the rakyat to choose you as a ruling party at federal level; the same manifesto or strength of BN.

in your future manifesto, pay attention to investor/ corporate sectors. Draft the manifestos as if you are going to become the Malaysia ruling party. Alike BN, play with statistics and numbers; say 10 million for education, say millions for safety etc. opposition should have shadow cabinet line-up to prepare these manifesto.

Now, concentrate on Sabah and Sarawak parliamentary and state seats. pkr (or the opposition front) must show that it is a party for all races and ethnics ie bajau, kadazan, dusun etc. most of them vote BN because their mentality (i might be wrong) is BN brings development. if you can develop the 5 states, they can open their eyes and vote opposition in next general election.

Pas, pkr, dap etc must groom leaders or candidates for the 13th general election. Pick candidates with strong education background so that people have faith in them able to govern states (or Malaysia). Starting from today, these candidates must turun padang to list down all the problem faces by rakyat and tackled the problems; win their heart and show them that you do works. if the candidates don’t have enough time and energy, seek help from opposition supporters or appoint assistances as many as you need.BN won uncontested in 11 parliamentary seats meaning opposition lacks 11 leaders/ candidates.

Starting today until the next GE, keep record of mismanagements, corruptions (power and money), wrongdoings of BN for your campaigning points.

Most of the main media in Malaysia are controlled by the ruling party. opposition candidates must use alternative medium such as internet or blogs to convey their messages, counter the ruling party allegations, reveals corruptions by BN etc. if the candidates are busy, ask the party supporters to run the blog; maybe can elect media committee. The opposition have won five states and KL; make as many press conference as you can to address your developments, progress etc. each states have its own radio station; use these opportunity to deliver the messages.

Work very hard during this 4 or 5 years!!

If not, rakyat will vote for BN in the next election

if selangor can beat pahang or sabah or sarawak in economy, safety, education etc performances, the sabahan and the sarawakian and pahang people might choose the opposition in 13th GE.

The opposition must pick an outstanding state as a benchmark while governing the 5 states. If say pahang attracted 10 foreign investors, the five states must have more than 10 investors. If sabah crime rate is 10 %( let say it is a state with lowest crime rate), the opposition must have lower than 10% of crime rate. The examples are endless.

  22. landofisreformer:

    Dear YB Nik,

Congratulations! I was so relieved 2 hear of your win. Let me get 2 the point. I feel I can help in some of the reforms especially in land matters as my contribution to clean up corruption-(I try to follow every road/trafic rules now too.) I deal daily with land matters as m a small time lawyer dealin wit only man-on-the-street’s problems. I hav seen the unfairness to my clients (in terms of delay, inefficiency and waste of money) when dealin with land and Court matters. I have many ideas for the reform in the administration process which I think will benefit rakyat. So I am willing to volunteer my ideas 2 help.If you have the time, maybe you/your team can contact me for highlighting which areas I have noticed corruption causing clients to suffer- and all they just want to do is buy a place to live in……. where is your official ofice now if I could visit you?

  23. azlan:

yeah yeah… now .. go and talk to that kit siang about malay sovereignty … he has gone overboard when try to belittle the Sultan of Perak .. damn it … I hope PKR will do something about this and make a solid stand on this matter.. no hanky panky talk cock and bullshit thing!!
