Prison REITs

Do you want to invest in a fast-growing sector, with steady guaranteed dividends from an almost risk-free source? This scheme is similar to the fledgling real estate investment trusts (REITs) as you pay for new property for a growing supply of tenants.

Then the answer is in Prison REITs!

The British Treasury under Gordon Brown is ruling out extra money for prisons in the UK. Desperate for funds, the Home Office is now thinking of getting the public to invest to build new prisons managed by private firms.

The paymaster will be the government, which means that it’s almost risk-free. The British prison service is at a breaking point, needing 8,000 new prison places. And the government’s punitive penal policy has seen a steady rise in prison inmates over the past ten years.

I’m sure my investment analyst friends would recommend this ‘REIT’!

Maybe our own government would be interested in this example of a PFI?
